Sheridan and Sheffield, Chicago, with View of Mode Theater

A few weeks ago, one of our readers mentioned going to the Mode theatre. Well, here are some fabulous scenes of that part of Sheridan Rd taken in 1937. The first is a captured detail.

  1. In the second picture from the top you see the back of a double deck bus that is painted in a solid dark color and in other photos from this collection you see double deck buses in a two tone.
Is this dark colored bus a Chicago Motor Coach and the two tone a CTA bus?
    Thanks
    Al

  3. thanks Joanne
I went to the ChicagoBus.org and there were pictures of CMC buses and they were painted in a two tone paint similar to the CTA buses.

  4. My neighborhood 1946-1954. Spent many an hour at the Mode Theater shown and the Sheridan Theater seen above L tracks down Sheridan, Trail's End BBQ, Sheridan Restaurant and the Rexall at Irving...and Wrigley.

Perfect...Lake M 3/4 blocks east. Le Moyne and St. Mary of the Lake grammar and St. George HS 54-57. Not really "Uptown" but "Lakeview" from Addison to Montrose, where Uptown sort of really began and ran to just past Foster at Catalpa or Balmoral, where "Edgewater" began...

  12. Sheridan, Sheffield Byron;...let's see. Across from Mode was Pomolive Laundry (Zelkin) at Dakin corner: Franklin Drugs, opposite Dakin Liquors including "Bucket..." down Dakin, there was Zoolanz Cleaners, back to west side of Sheridan, was John's Butcher, L and Greek grocers,
Sheridan Lounge and Rest, Burney Bros Bakery Rexall across Irving was Walgreens, Beritz, Taboo/Sip and Bottle, Currency Exhange, Pritchards Jewelry, Chinese laundry, restaurant...next to Palmmolive was hardward store.

Feel free to fill-in missing p;aces....

Was Carlos Hotel in next block opposie Hebard Storage or the trane school?

Cannot recall mane of store at Sheffield and Sheridan West side... near the tracks off Byron was "the street of doors...Alta Viata, Across Seminary was Houae of Good Shepard,

  14. Bobbill is not sure how this blog thing works, but FWIW...

Bobbill used to live above Taboo/Sip and Bottle joints at 3955 Sheridan and knew a few dodgers around the area...we used to look out window to see what flag Cubs flew, mostly Ls in those days...

Greek's grocery, Palmalive at Dakin was Zelken family, who lived down Dakin then. Bobbill attended, Lemoine and St. Mary of the Lake grammar schools...all circa 1944-1954. Fun to add and dredge up these times.

  15. Anon +1...I typo too often....FWIW I lived above the Taboo, Mrs P was my grandmother...Jewelry store...was me stamping-grounds.

I summers used to swim off Waveland rocks and eat Mike Manno's hot dogs, first in city to put celery salt on dogs...had his dog stand in boulivard across from Immaculata HS...dog as a quarter then.

    Simple world...void of bell-clappers!!!!!

  16. The area, then, was known as "Lakeview," for those who lived there, particular families, who lived near Irving and Sheridan and had children attending St Mary/s of the Lake grammar or LeMoine CPS over on Addisonmuat east of L tracks and Cub's Park...Wrigley...
