Remember the Chicago Blizzard of 1967?

How Edgewater looked after the blizzard of 1967 dumped 23 inches of snow on Chicago. Drifts completely buried cars. In true Chicago weather style, it had been 65 degrees just two days before.

Where were you when the blizzard brought the city to its knees?

I wasn't born yet to witness 67, but I remember the blizzard of 79. I was in the fifth grade and we didn't have to go to school. It was awesome.

I recall the blizzard of 67, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Fun for the kids, not so fun for us adults trying to get to work. I can recall seeing lots of trolley buses unable to move due to their poles being torn from their power source, not that they would have been able to move anyway, buses suffered a similar fate. I loved the way people helped each other out, you just pitched in, not waiting for someone to ask, you saw people had a situation and you just pitched in and vice versa.

I can remember the blizzards of 1962,1967,1979. They were all good ones. I live in the south now and if we get one inch of snow everything stops. I to always like the way everybody pitched in to help everybody else, I had to shovel the sidewalks on Malden and Lawrence, and on Kenmore. But we always had alot of help.

I lived near the lake and my friends and I went out and played ON the Outer Drive! It was loaded with snow and closed to cars.

My very straight-laced dad claims that in '67 he went out onto Lake Shore Drive to survey the carnage, and came across a CTA bus where the door was just open a bit. He got into the bus and couldn't resist sitting in the drivers seat... which led to him starting the bus... which led to him putting it in gear, trying to drive a few feet, getting stuck, shutting off the bus, and walking away.... (who wouldn't?!?)

As for '79, the courtyard building I grew up in (just at the south edge of Uptown) had 6' tall drifts. My buddy John and I dug a network of tunnels through the main drift over the course of a couple of days. Fantastic!

The blizzard of '79 was awesome. We had six foot drifts up to the house, too. I don't think my dad enjoyed it as much as us kids did.
