Old Edgewater Post Office, Chicago, Illinois, 1908

I'm not sure where this was originally located--are there any readers who do?

I'm going to guess that it was at 975 W. Foster Ave., which I think would put it where the McDonald's is at Sheridan and Foster (diagonally across the intersection from the new Dominick's).

I googled...
chicago "edgewater post office"
and clicked the fourth link that came up: the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, and found a clip referring to someone's address being "975 Foster Avenue, Edgewater Post Office, Chicago" as of 1908.

The four-plus-one apartment building on the SE corner of Foster/Sheridan is 955 W. Foster, so I figured the McDonald's is where 975 W. Foster would be (although I think McD's address is a Sheridan one).

Although I realize that if the Edgewater P.O. was on the south side of Foster, it was really in Uptown. D'oh!

Google...who knew? ;-)

The building was located not on Foster Avenue but on the north east corner of Broadway and Catalpa, across the street from St Ita Church. It stood until quite recently (though modified). A mixded use condo building now sits on the site.

The reference of "975 Foster Avenue, Edgewater Post Office, Chicago" refers not to the location of the post office itself but rather to the post office having jurisdiction of the 975 Foster Avenue address.

Thanks for the tip, anonymous! I just checked with the Edgewater Historical Society and found this in their Spring 2005 newsletter:

...a new postal facility was built at 5501 N. Broadway, across the street from the present St. Ita Church. (That building, though altered beyond recognition on the exterior, was demolished recently to make way for the condo building that presently sits on the site.)

There are at least two locations that still look like this in Chicago. I'll see if I have pictures.

Here's a good overall site about these old PO's:

Alan, that's a great link, thank you. I'll be keeping an eye out for the pony express rider in the future.

Thanks, everyone, for your input about the city's old post offices!

The cost became very low priced. I bought an estimate from an additional organization the other organization became three instances more than what he incurred me. Modern cement flooring and southern Illinois epoxy is the perfect answer in case you need your specific flooring surfaces stained southernillinoisepoxy.com.
