Cheetah Lounge, 1967

Thanks to a reader for sending this one in! For a brief time in the late sixties, the Aragon Ballroom was transformed into the uber-hip Cheetah Lounge.

  1. Hello,

I was hoping you could give me a bit more information about this photo? I would like to use it in a project I have been working on, and I need to track down the photographer. There are actually two others on your page that would work really well also. Great stuff! Would you please email me any information you may have?

    Thank you!

  17. Chicago has more history than I thought. i sued to think that North American in general lacked history until I started reading more about the American Revolution. Our history is deep, and you don't need a lecture to know that. With that said, I did get a lecture from an old guy who did my refrigerator repair service and he said it well: "We have more history than you could possibly read in five lifetimes!"

  29. The most elaborate discotheque was Cheetah, on Broadway and 53rd Street, where everybody, according to LIFE, looked like a kook in a Kubla Khanteen. The three thousand colored lightbulbs dimmed and flicked and popped into an infinity of light patterns, reflecting off shiny aluminum sheets. Cheetah held two thousand people and offered not only dancing but a library, a movie room, and color television. The Cheetah provides the most curious use of the intermedia, wrote Jonas Mekas. Whereas the Dom shows are restricted or became restricted to the In-circle, Cheetah was designed for the masses. An attempt was made to go over the persona, over the ego to reach the impersonal, abstract, universal.
