Wilson and Broadway in 1955, with all those gorgeous old buildings still intact.
Seriously, vintage views of this stretch always make me want to weep. What a beautiful block it once was.

ReplyDeleteHi Cheap Tickets! Did you grow up on Wilson?
ReplyDeleteJoanne, I have some images you might be interested in borrowing. my email is frworksonpaper@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI am looking for an image of Bissets Department Store, which was close to the intersection of Broadway and Wilson. It closed around 1960 and then the building became a bank, then was knocked down and became a parking lot. My grandfather Lewis Bisset owned the store and I would appreciate any images or information! Thanks, please email me lisaronnie@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteyou mention bissett's dept store. my mother used to shop there too. she used to buy my underwear and socks there. wasn't it on broadway just south of wilson(se corner) thanks for the memories marilynne
ReplyDeleteI don't have a photo, but I vaguely remember going to Bissett's with my grandmother when I was a very little girl, ca 1940-1941. I was most fascinated by the pneumatic tubes that took money, etc. to & from the office upstairs. And I remember the handsome wood & glass cases of goods. The photo is wonderful!
ReplyDeletethe building, Bissets was in was on the S.E. Corner of Wilson and Broadway. you could enter on Wilson Ave and come out on Broadway
ReplyDeleteBut right on the corner was a Cigar store, it was a small place and they sold all kinds of joke things, cigarette loads, sneezing powder and joy buzzers. in addition to cigarettes and tobacco
