Barouge Lounge and Liquor Town, Wilson Avenue, Uptown Chicago 1955

Maybe I'm a little tired tonight, but I don't recognize this intersection of Wilson offhand, and can't quite make out the name of the hotel in the background. Can anyone enlighten me?

  1. Thanks to a Facebook reader for helping me to figure this out. We're looking at the southwest corner of Wilson and Racine. The hotel in the background is the Warren Hotel at 4546 N. Racine, an address which puts all of this where the current Truman campus is.

  2. Agreed. I found an address for Liquortown (1201 W. Wilson) from the Chgo Trib archives, so this jibes.

  3. A friend has a trade token from the Barouge Lounge, 1203 Wilson Avenue - it is good for a 5¢ drink. John in ID

  4. Cool! If only drinks were still a nickel.

If you have a pic, I'd love to see it.

  8. I CAN REMEMBER STOPPING IN THERE WITH MY DAD, AROUND 1966 67? SUCH A LONG TIME AGO, THOUGH I STILL CAN REMEMBER THE DIM LIGHTING, EVEN THE SMELL, SITTING ON A BAR STOOL DRINKING A COKE, WHILE MY DAD DRANK A BEER AND TALKED TO HIS BUDDIES!

  9. Lived in the apartments over the lounge in 1974/1975...lovely place! Roaches so bad that if you put food in the refrigerator, they'd eat the rubber seal off the door to get at it. Bathroom in the hall shared by four apartments, but it wasn't bad because the winos never bathed!
